“Salary Expectation”- what to say?

The one and only question that always stays the same is “What would your Salary expectation be?” also this question make some points very clear about us in the employer’s mind too. Hence the question and the answer both are very crucial. And replying to a tricky question like this is also very difficult. You always wish for a hike and expectations are almost double but the reply should be limited to some extent. Here are some points you must keep in mind while replying this question.

Suggested salary expectations

Too high:- requesting for too high salary can make the employer thing about any other option with less expected salary then you are asking for. Also the interviewer can also think this as a poor approach and can consider this as a flaw on your personality.

Too low: – requesting for too low salary can also raise a point of doubt in the interviewer’s mind. Asking for low salary can’t list you on the most demanding person for the post; never assume this can be an option for getting the job. This can raise a point about your behavior in your previous companies.

This leads to only one question i.e. How to discuss salary expectation then?

Always be genuine while answering this question. Before facing the interview do a background study about the company and the satisfaction level of employees regarding their salaries. Also get an idea of the % of hike you can ask for. Asking for a salary hike that can be considered reasonable can also get accepted.

Few points never to discuss are following:-

  1. Never discuss your previous salary details.
  2. Don’t give any idea about all the privileges that you use to accept in your previous job.
  3. Never discuss about your dream salary or the total amount of salary you wish to make by some or any means.
  4. Negotiation is a part of salary that you are going to have and always make sure this point never go wrong. Always reply with a positive approach. Never say anything that sound you are letting it go.
  5. If the salary is less then you expected them ask for some other position with higher pay.

Always stay positive and wait for the right time and right post with your Expected Salary to hit your door. Never lose your heart and keep learning.
